Marriage is ordained by God
As a new mother, I understand more than ever the importance of both the father and mother parenting in the home. Mothers and fathers are given different divine roles from God. Mothers are to nurture their children while fathers are there to preside and protect. Our Heavenly Father gave us different abilities so that when we come together as man and woman in marriage we can combine our gifts.
Children need the chance to have both a mother and a father. President Nelson said, "Male and female are created for what they can do and become, together. It takes a man and a woman to bring a child into the world. Mothers and fathers are not interchangeable. Men and women are distinct and complementary. Children deserve a chance to grow up with both a mom and a dad."
The question was posed, "As members of the Church, do we blow out of proportion the redefining of marriage? Why or why not?" I actually believe that as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints we defend the family enough. Marriage is governed by, not by man. We are not able to choose if same sex marriage is appropriate or not. By's law it is not. President Nelson proclaims, "Social and political pressures to change marriage laws are resulting in practices contrary to’s will regarding the eternal nature and purposes of marriage. Man simply cannot make moral what has declared to be immoral. Sin, even if legalized by man, is still sin in the eyes of."
I liked Cathy Ruse's remarks regarding this subject. She stated that in the past, the government was only concerned with the fact that men and woman make babies and what was going to happen with those babies. However, the government seems to be concerned with who you love. She concludes that this is not an improvement.
I believe in marriage between a man and a woman. I know that God would not have it another way. I also believe that our children deserve to have a mother and a father. I know that I, as a woman, could not be a father and that a man could not replace a mother.
